“Resetting in Jamaica: Why I Had to Leave to Come Home to Myself”

"Resetting in Jamaica: Why I Had to Leave to Come Home to Myself" Actualizado: 12 mayI didn’t go to Jamaica for a vacation. I went because I was unraveling. I was the kind of tired that no nap, weekend, or wellness product could fix. The kind of tired that comes from holding up systems, people, teams, and appearances for years. On the outside, I was thriving: a leader, a strategist, a coach, an entrepreneur. But inside, I was on autopilot, managing burnout with caffeine and calendar hacks. So I left. Not forever. But long enough to find myself again. The Decision to Pause I packed a suitcase, booked a ticket, and told the world I was going on sabbatical. Some people thought I was brave. Others thought I was breaking. Maybe it was both. But I knew I couldn’t keep living inside a version of myself that was no longer aligned. I needed space. Not just physical distance — but energetic, emotional, and spiritual space. Space to rest. Space to listen. Space to feel something other than pressure. Jamaica gave me all of that. And more. What I Found on That Island I found mornings that weren’t tethered to urgency. I found sunlight on my skin that felt like therapy. I found a version of me I had buried under productivity and performance. I walked. I cooked. I breathed. I traded meetings for movement. I cried in quiet kitchens and journaled on beaches. I read books. I meditated. I stopped pretending to be okay. And in that stillness, clarity returned. Reset. Reimagine. Reboot. That trip wasn’t an escape. It was a remembering. A reimagining. It was where the first version of The Pause Place was born. Where I created the RESET. REIMAGINE. REBOOT. framework not just for others — but for myself. Because I learned that clarity doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from slowing down enough to hear what your life has been trying to say. Jamaica wasn’t the answer. But it was the doorway. Coming Home to MyselfComing back to the States, I didn’t bring home souvenirs. I brought a new way of being.I restructured my business. I redefined success. I made peace with my late ADHD diagnosis and started building a life that honored the way my brain actually works. Most of all, I stopped apologizing for needing rest. And I started honoring pause as a practice — not a luxury. Reflection & Invitation What would it look like to give yourself space instead of shame? How to Build a Business When Your Brain Doesn’t Do 9–5

3-Minute Energy Check-Ins That Changed My Life We usually don’t notice we’re burned out until we’re already there. But what if you could catch it sooner? That’s what 3-minute energy check-ins gave me. They became a grounding ritual — a quick body scan and a moment of honesty before I said yes, jumped into another Zoom, or ignored my exhaustion. And the beauty is: it doesn’t take a coach, a crisis, or a calendar overhaul. It takes three minutes and some truth. What Is an Energy Check-In?   It’s a brief pause to ask: How do I feel physically, mentally, and emotionally right now? What’s my energy like on a scale of 1–10? What do I actually have capacity for next? Simple. Grounding. Game-changing. The Science of Self-Awareness Research shows that self-awareness is a key predictor of leadership success and emotional regulation. In fact: Teams led by self-aware leaders are 25% more effective, according to Cornell University. Regular self-check-ins can reduce stress, improve focus, and boost decision quality (American Psychological Association, 2020). Even just a few mindful minutes per day can lead to improved emotion regulation and resilience (Harvard Health, 2021). My Personal Practice I keep a small notepad (or sometimes just my Notes app) with a simple format: Time: 10:00 AM Energy Level (1–10): 5 Noticing: Tension in shoulders, mental fog Need: Step away from screen, hydrate, 5-minute stretch No judgment. No need to “fix” everything. Just data — and permission to honor it. Sometimes I adjust. Sometimes I push through. But at least I know where I’m starting from. Why It Works for Neurodivergent Brains (and High Performers) If you struggle with time blindness, sensory overwhelm, or overcommitting — this quick reflection helps anchor you. It gives you back your agency. For high achievers, it’s also a tool for smarter decision-making:   You don’t need to do more — you need to pause better. Try It Now 🕒 Take 3 minutes. What’s your energy on a scale from 1–10? Where is that showing up in your body? What do you need right now? Honor that. Even if it’s just awareness.
